In 1984 the Korean Catholic Church celebrated its bicentennial. To celebrate this anniversary, Pope John Paul II visited Korea. The Pope came to Sogang to meet with the members of the religious orders, Brothers, Nuns, and Priests at the Gymnasium, and with Korean intellectuals at the Auditorium.

1979 Nobel Peace Prize winner Mother Teresa visited Sogang and gave two lectures, one in the Auditorium and the other at the basketball court, at which she appealed for all people to practice true love.

Freshmen quota was increased to 1,770 and graduation quota to 1,360.
The College of Liberal Arts was expanded to ten departments, the College of Science and Engineering to seven depts.
