Sogang University was named, by the Ministry of Education, a pilot university for introducing new educational ideas and methods. Doctoral Programs were inaugurated.

University Charter was granted by the Ministry of Education and Sogang University became a full University consisting of the Liberal Arts College with six departments, the College of Science and Engineering with five departments, and the Commerce College with three departments.
Freshmen quota was increased to 425.
The Rev. John P. Daly, S.J. having completed two terms as Sogang College President, was named the first University President (also served as the second President).
