Overview
Establishment of the Graduate School of Media & Communication
After applying for establishment permission to the Educational Ministry in October 25 in 1991, the Graduate School of Media & Communication attained the approval in November 15 of the same year. It opened in August 25, 1992, starting with fifty seven students in MA course and four research students of Newspaper Publication, Broadcasting, and Advertising. As soon as opening, the Graduate School of Media & Communication began to show steep growing pace. The students’ quota increased repeatedly. It increased to 105 in 1993 September, to 125 in 1994 October, to 1155 in 1995. And in 1997 October, the entrance quota of students extended to 122.With such an increase in quantity, the Graduate School of Media & Communication reorganized its curriculum. In 1994 October, it combined previous four departments to the Department of Communication and made departments with detailed majors like Newspaper Publication, Broadcasting, Advertising, Visual Play. In 1996 November, Media Education and Information Industry was newly established. Hereby, the Department of Communication came to have detailed majors such as Newspaper, Publication, Broadcasting, Advertisement, Public Information, Play – Visual – Media. In 2000 May, the name of Information Industry Department was changed into Digital Media. As the Graduate School of Media & Communication has been developing, attached institute has established and was actively operated. Sogang-KBS Broadcast Academy collaborated by KBS Visual Center and the Graduate School of Media & Communication was newly opened. Owed by successive result of Broadcasting Academy, another attached institute, Academy of Multi Media Creating, was opened in 1997 January. It was collaborated by the Graduate School of Media & Communication and Jeil C&C Corporation.
Currently, the Graduate School of Media & Communication is implementing depth research and educating in wide range of News, Publication, Broadcasting, Advertisement, Public Information, Play, Visual, Media Education, and Digital Media in the manner of industry-academy cooperation. The Graduate School of Media & Communication secures abundant Professors and sufficient facilities. As reconciling theory with practical works, it provides the opportunity for reeducation of theory to active workers and encourages preliminary press who hopes working for press to learn theory and practical work. Through the educational process like the above, the Graduate School of Media & Communication is training high quality professionals in communication field who has prominent competence and originality.
Features of the Graduate School of Media & Communication
The Graduate School of Media & Communication can guarantee students' right of choice by preparing many sorts of programs. In spite of special graduate school, it allows students to select various subjects by establishing theory subject and practicing subject courses with three hours class performing five times in a week. Also, the Graduate School of Media & Communication offers the most advanced educational facilities. Facility of Sogang University's Visual Culture Centre as well as an auxiliary facilities like Broadcasting Academy and Multimedia Creating Academy are appropriately used. Moreover, through developing educationally useful software and organizing properties on experience of the press in a reasonable and systemic way, the Graduate School of Media & Communication is making suitable circumstance to educate professional presses with theories and practical ability. Active interchange with other graduate schools is one of the merits the Graduate School of Media & Communication in Sogang University has. The Graduate School of Media & Communication allows credit exchange among other graduate school in Sogang University and is extending credit exchange to abroad like America, Australia, and Europe. Particularly, cooperating with the Graduate School of Visual Art selected for "Operating Centre of Brain of Korea in 21st Century", it provides lectures by the best professors and advanced practice equipments together. The system of lifelong education support cannot be omitted from characters in curricula of Graduate School of Media & Communication.The educational level of the Graduate School of Media & Communication is evaluated by competence of alumni and alumnae who are going to work at professional field in society. Therefore, the Graduate School of Media & Communication newly opened subjects flexible to curricula, corresponding to rapid change in the press field followed by innovation of information/communication technology, and is preparing lifelong education supporting system encouraging taking a lecture not only to attending students but also to graduates. Also, as developing cooperated program with graduates, particularly, it hosts associated seminar with attending students and alumni/alumnae who were proofed their competence in work field. It implements programs grafting theories in curricula with professionalism of the work field and is forming the community of Graduate School of Media & Communication. Through the place of discussion and harmony, students and graduates are laboring to development of both of them.
