Students Recruited for Artificial Intelligence (AI) Department,

Graduate School of Sogang for 2022

- Nurturing integrative talents to lead the world with artificial intelligence technology in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution

Recruitment of freshmen for 2022 academic year has begun for the Department of Artificial Intelligence of Graduate School of Sogang. The primary applications will be accepted from October 6 (Wed) to October 13 (Wed), and the second round of applications will be accepted from November 10 (Wed) to November 16 (Tue).

The establishment of the Artificial Intelligence Department in both the undergraduate and graduate school was decided by the university board of directors on September 14. The majors of the graduate-level Artificial Intelligence Department to start in March 2022 are operated in three tracks: AI Convergence, Digital Human & Entertainment, and Smart AI. Of these, Digital Human & Entertainment and Smart AI majoring programs will be opened based on industry-university cooperation with Smilegate and LG Electronics, respectively. For the operation of the department, 28 AI-related professors from nine departments are currently participating, and the faculty will be reinforced by other full-time professors in time for start of the undergraduate-level AI Department scheduled for the 2023 academic year.

• ‘Artificial Intelligence Convergence (AI+X)’ and ‘Industry Customization’ Curriculum Composition

The characteristics of the graduate school AI Department curriculum can be said to be a 'convergence of artificial intelligence (AI+X)' and 'industrial demand-based.' In other words, based on the core subjects required for learning the basic and in-depth theories on artificial intelligence, AI-converged curriculum is designed in order to apply those theories to various application fields. Furthermore, the graduate program goes beyond the study in artificial intelligence itself to lead students to challenge with AI-based problem solving based on their expertise in line with the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. For example, in the case of economics, the convergence of economics and AI technology focuses on ‘AI finance research’ that solves problems that are yet to be resolved in the financial field.

In addition, the graduate program will include practical training to foster fundamental and diversely talented individuals for artificial intelligence required by companies such as Smilegate and LG Electronics. To this end, new courses are planned, such as AI-enhanced capstone design and artificial intelligence challenge practice, in which industry professionals join by proposing problem issues and contributing guidance in the problem-solving process.

• Full Support by Smilegate and LG Electronics for Scholarships and Internships

‘Digital Human & Entertainment’ and ‘Smart AI’ were confirmed to install as majors in the graduate program of the AI Department by the agreement signed with Smilegate Group and LG Electronics in September.

The Digital Human & Entertainment major admits 20 students for the Master’s program every year, and provides scholarships worth KRW 18 million per person annually. A special advantage of this program is that it guarantees ‘No Obligation’ in the employment by Smilegate upon graduation. In addition, Smilegate plans to jointly participate in the curriculum designing in the major subjects such as AI basics and support a cloud computing environment for AI/SW practice.

As to 'Smart AI’ major, a program with ‘guaranteed employment’ at LG Electronics upon graduation, 18 students are admitted for Master program every year. Successful applicants will receive an industry-university scholarship of KRW 18 million per year in addition to the school's TA (teaching assistant) and RA (research assistant) allowances. LG Electronics will also collaborates with the university to design the curriculum for the AI Department , also supporting major operating expenses and student internship and field training programs during vacations. The curriculum of the Smart AI will be expanded to courses such as autonomous driving, mobile robots, bio/healthcare, connected AI (communications), smart home appliances, and rechargeable battery BMS to meet the needs of LG affiliates.

• Application without restrictions on major

A distinctive feature of the Department of Artificial Intelligence at Sogang is that it does not limit its recruitment only to AI-related majors in undergraduate programs such as computer engineering, electronic engineering, and mechanical engineering.

Head Professor Nang Jong-ho of the Department of Artificial Intelligence, said, “In fact, since students of Computer Science & Engineering and Electronic Engineering departments can study artificial intelligence at the graduate school of their existing major, we will look for candidate students from other departments seeking the convergence of AI technology with their majors.” “However,” he added, “in order to follow the AI classes, you need to possess at least the knowledge and interest of the software or artificial intelligence-related majors (convergence software, artificial intelligence, big data science-related majors, etc.). Therefore, for students who are interested but are not sure from where to start, we recommend that you start with the above three related majors and learn the basic theories first.”

President Sim Jong-hyeok announced that, “With the establishment of the Department of Artificial Intelligence in the undergraduate and graduate schools, Sogang University will carry out education and research focused on the application of AI technology to the diverse academic fields in Sogang programs. Through these endeavors, we will build the foundation to nurture integrative talents in artificial intelligence who will lead the world in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, for which AI is a core element.”

The online admission briefing session for the Graduate School of Artificial Intelligence will be held on November 2 (Tuesday). Details will be posted on the Graduate School website.
