Sogang University Selected for ‘2021 Global Talent Cultivation Project’ by the Ministry of Science and ICT

- Sogang University partners up with Carnegie Mellon University to nurture global talents in AI -

On August 17, Sogang University won the ‘2021 Global Talent Cultivation Project’ organized by the Ministry of Science and ICT. This project is designed to nurture Korean graduate students into global-minded talented individuals by supporting them through research and education experiences in advanced countries with leading information and communication technologies related to the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The areas of support focus on promising ICT and innovation-led growth technologies, including AI, cloud, big data, blockchain, next-generation security and communication, and VR/AR.

In collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), famous for its world-class research and education programs in the AI field, Professor Nang Jong-ho of the Department of Computer Science & Engineering won the project with his proposal titled ‘Sogang-CMU Global AI-led Talent Cultivation Project,’ which will recruit 15 graduate students from Sogang University to complete an advanced AI course at CMU.

The 15 graduate recruits will come from departments with research related to the field of AI, selected through paper screening, tests, and interviews, and they will be offered support toward learning world-leading AI technologies by participating in four AI-related classes and individual projects over the course of six months (from January to June 2022) at CMU. In order to run the program, a total of 1 billion won will be funded by the Ministry of Science and ICT, and this will cover educational expenses for students (60 million won per person, including the CMU educational fee, living expenses, and visa issuance fee). The details regarding recruitment and pre-training will be found on the graduate school website from September 2021.

Professor Nang said, “This project allows graduate students who are interested in the AI field to have the opportunity to study at CMU, which boasts world-class strength in AI research and educational programs.” He went on to say, “We hope this opportunity will help graduate students grow into global leaders in AI, while the professors participating in the project will do their best to recruit students fairly and to run the program safely.”
