'Touch Art Archive' by Kim Si-Joon, Department of Art & Technology,

Selected for Shin Young-Kyun’s Support in the Graduation Project in 2021

'Touch Art Archive', produced by Kim Si-Joon, a student in the Art & Technology Department of Sogang University, was selected as an excellent piece of work in the Creative Capstone Project (CCP) class and was picked for Shin Young-Kyun’s support in the graduation project for 2021.

'Touch Art Archive' is a website that archives 107 paintings from four types of textbooks used in schools for the visually impaired converted into STL files that can consequently be 3D printed. This work was created on the back of the reality of failures of application in the education field despite thorough research on 3D paintings utilizing the remaining senses of the visually impaired.

Through 3D-printed paintings used in 'Touch Art Archive', the aim is to overcome the current scope of art classes at schools for the visually impaired focused on limited Braille materials and creation classes. This archive is expected to elevate the standards for art appreciation classes to meet those of the 2015 Art Education Amendment.

Kim Si-Joon said, “Existing classes in the field of art appreciation were lacking due to the physical limitations of the visually impaired and the omission of images in Braille textbooks. While there is research related to 3D painting appreciation using the remaining senses of the visually impaired, I felt that it was necessary to archive paintings in textbooks that had been converted into 3D printing files in order for research efforts to be applied in the field of education.”

Meanwhile, Kim Si-Joon is currently contacting teachers and working on PR activities so that this project can be actualized in schools for the visually impaired nationwide. He stated that he is also working on ways for this project to be used for art education in cooperation with 'Art Beyond Sight, See 3D', an overseas art education association for the visually impaired, and he will present his thesis at the 2022 HCI Society in Korea.
