Winner of the Kaggle Data Analytics Competition

Nam Min-hyuk, a fourth-year student who is enrolled in the School of Economics at Sogang (Computer Science and Engineering and Mathematics in multiple majors) accompanied by Professor Lee Soo-hyung of the Graduate School of International Studies at Seoul National University participated in the Kaggle Data Analytics Competition and won first place on November 16. Kaggle is one of the world’s largest AI communities and a competition platform operated by Google. This competition is the first of its kind in which Korean participants have won.

In the latest competition which was presented with the theme “Educational Environment and Inequality in the COVID-19 era,” Professor Lee Soo-hyung and student Nam Min-hyuk were highly commended for combining data given by the organizer with economic data to analyze the digital learning status during the COVID-19 pandemic from a variety of angles.

More specifically, the research team compared income levels of elementary, middle and high school students throughout 23 states of the U.S. with their rates of access to online education services. The research revealed that those in the second-lowest income bracket displayed the lowest percentage of students in terms of utilizing educational services.

Student Nam Min-hyuk expressed his captivation for continued study when he returns from studying abroad. “Based on the computer engineering and mathematics that I have learned through the readily-accessible multiple major system of Sogang, I would like to study environment, health, and education issues that are of ever increasing relevance to our daily lives using various forms of data.” He added, “The latest research corroborated the current situation where educational opportunities were influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic depending on students’ social and economic backgrounds. Moving forward, I aspire to conduct research on ways to narrow the opportunity gap.”
