● 'Raphael Live Studio,' the scaffolding for each student’s unique future

The name 'Raphael Live Studio' was chosen for Raphael, the guardian angel of young people and travelers, with the hope that it will become a space that opens up the future for young people at Sogang University to prepare as they embark on their own special paths. The studio consists of a filming studio for video production and live broadcasting, along with an editing suite for editing filmed videos.

The filming studio is equipped with two cameras (Canon VIXIA HF G70), a PC for filming and editing, a filming switcher (ATEM MINI PRO ISO), filming S/W (OBS), an audio mixer (FLOW8), stand lights, a monitoring TV, chroma key (white, green, blue), two microphones, and a prompter. Anyone who belongs to Sogang University, including students, professors, and staff, can use the studio to shoot videos using professional equipment and to produce live broadcasts. This will allow them to produce more diverse content with excellent quality, and the studio is expected to contribute to the cultivation of media talents.

● Funded by an endowment from Professor Kim Kyung-hwan of the Department of Economics, an exceptional life traveler

The Raphael Live Studio was funded by an endowment from Professor Kim Kyung-hwan of the Department of Economics, who wished to establish a creative and innovative space within the library.

Professor Kim Kyung-hwan, a graduate with the class of ’76 from the Department of Economics, joined the faculty of the Department of Economics at his alma mater in the fall of 1988 and served as director of the Economic Research Institute, dean of Academic Affairs, and executive vice president of Research & External Affairs. After his retirement in August last year, he was appointed as a research professor based on his outstanding achievements in the field of economics and his great eruditeness and virtue.

Professor Kim Kyung-hwan’s family has been associated with Sogang for nearly 100 years, propelling it among the ranks of the most prominent Sogang families. His father, Professor Emeritus Kim Yong-kwon, had been a member of the university’s original faculty for more than 30 years, while his sisters, Dr. Kim Cheon-hee (Korean Language and Literature, ‘79) and Kim Myung-hye (German Language and Literature, ‘81), MA, also enrolled in the university’s undergraduate courses and completed their doctoral and master’s programs at Sogang, respectively. In accordance with Professor Emeritus Kim Yong-kwon’s belief that a truly prestigious university is one to which its professors are willing to send their children, all of his children have joined the Sogang family.

Loyola Library hosted an opening ceremony on Friday, February 24, with Research Professor Kim Kyung-hwan and Professor Emeritus Kim Yong-kwon on hand to commemorate the launch of the Raphael Live Studio.

“While attending Sogang University, the library was my greatest source of pride, and I’m glad to be able to contribute to creating such a great place,” said Professor Kim Kyung-hwan. “I hope Sogang will become even greater, and that this library may bring us even more pride in the future.”

A library spokesperson said, “New technologies, like artificial intelligence, have been emerging recently, but I think it is the content that truly increases the value of utilizing these technologies. I’m sincerely grateful to Professor Kim Kyung-hwan for creating a space in the library for students to create content. The library staff will operate it with all our hearts so that the benefactor’s love for students can be well expressed to them.”
