Earthquake Relief Fund Delivery Ceremony for Turkey & Syria

- A total of KRW 11,000,000 was raised from 183 people and donated to help victims of the earthquake -

On Tuesday, March 8th, Sogang University delivered KRW 11,000,000 worth of fund-raising to GIPUM NANUM to help people affected by the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. The entire fundraising sum will be delivered to Syria, which has been relatively marginalized from relief and support, and will be used to buy relief supplies, including cold weather clothing, medicine, and food.


The delivery ceremony was held at the Presidential Reception Room of the Administration Building. The Executive Director of GIPUM NANUM Suk Yo-seop, President Sim Jong-hyeok, Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs Jeon Seong-hoon, Dean Kim Sang-yong of Campus Ministry Affairs, and Vice President of Public Affairs Jeong Ok-hyun participated to grace the ceremony with their presence.


In the early morning on February 6th (local time), an earthquake hit southern Turkey and northwestern Syria. In order to immediately send relief supplies and provide help to rebuild after the earthquake, Sogang University carried out a fundraising campaign among all faculty members and students from Friday, February 17th to Sunday, March 5th. 183 faculties and students donated a sum of about KRW 11,000,000 which the school delivered to GIPUM NANUM on their behalf.  GIPUM NANUM is an educational international relief and development NPO established by the Society of Jesus, which also established Sogang University. It seeks to lead change in the world through education based on the spirit of humanity.


President Sim Jong-hyeok commented, "The university is a place to foster leading citizens who contribute to ociety based on the spirit of humanity and on academic excellence." He also added, "We appreciate those who showed generosity to Turkey and Syria and continue to pray for the damaged area to recover soon and so that the victims may return to their daily lives as soon as possible.”


The executive director of GIPUM NANUM, Suk Yo-seop, said, “I am grateful for your compassion and support in helping Turkey and Syria to recover from the earthquake. GIPUM NANUM, along with Jesuit Refugee Service Syria, will set up temporary accommodations in Aziziyé, which is considered safe from the aftershock, to provide cold weather gear such as blankets and winter clothing, medicine and medical supplies, clean water, and emergency food to the victims suffering from cold and fear.”
