At 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 12, the ceremony for the '1st Outstanding Paper Award for Graduate Students' was held in the Main Conference Room in the Administration Building. The event was attended by Sogang President Sim Jong-hyeok, President Jeon Seong-hoon of the Graduate School, and Vice President Sung Bong-june of the Graduate School, along with 12 recipients of the award.

This ceremony was planned by the Graduate School Innovation Center to inspire graduate students to study and fortify their academic capabilities and research capacities. The Graduate School Innovation Center received a total of 78 papers after accepting papers in the examination stage or higher among dissertations, papers presented in academic conferences, and papers submitted to academic journals. The panel of 12 judges completed two rounds of fair evaluations on the papers spanning four fields: humanities and social sciences, economics and business administration, natural sciences and engineering sciences, and international students.

In consequence, 16 graduate students, including three students from the master’s course and 13 students from the doctor’s course, were selected, and they received the President’s Award to go with prize money of KRW 1 million. In particular, two international students were selected, respectively from the Department of Chinese Culture and the Department of Chemistry, which confirmed the positive results of the support program for international students passionately driven by the Graduate School.

“I congratulate you on winning this ‘Outstanding Paper Award for Graduate Students’,” said President Sim Jong-hyeok. “I hope you will continue to study with the same efforts that you have shown with sincerity and hard work in your papers so far.“

Sogang University is promoting various policies for research activities to redefine its position as a university centering on research on a global level. The university is carrying forward the annual 'Doctor’s Course Research-Capacity Consolidation Project' with Research Affairs, offering KRW 5 million yearly in support to students from the doctor’s course and allowing students to take special lectures, such as Academic Writing, Applied Statistics, and Basic Mathematics, during each vacation period for free in order to help them cement basic capabilities for their research. Besides this, the university is maintaining a yearly continued program, including the project for English-translation support for paper publication in international journals and the one-on-one writing-guidance project through cooperation with the Sogang Center for Writing.

The graduate students have shown great interest and positive responses to this first edition of the award, and it was meaningful that the school could see their excellent research results,” said the director of the Graduate School Innovation Center. “We will actively support them by establishing a positive research ecosystem so that the Graduate School can become more research-centered.
