Newly Established Micro-Major System as

the New Paradigm of Convergence Education

- Possible to apply for up to two majors from the 3rd semester -

The micro-major system will be implemented beginning in the 1st semester of 2023. Since its opening, Sogang University has removed existing barriers in school systems and started the first convergence major system, regarded as the originator of convergence education. In particular, Sogang University gained academic excellence from its various major systems, such as the multi-major and joint-major systems, along with the student-designed major system, helping to open the big world of 'studies' beyond 'departments.' In addition, Sogang University newly established the micro major system by lowering credit standards to allow students with interests in other major subjects to complete courses more easily than in the multi-major system; students are recognized as having completed a micro-major if they have completed at least 12 credits.

● The micro-major system can activate convergence education for diverse academic acquisition

The micro-major system is a newly implemented major system that certifies the completion of a course on the academic transcript if a student gains 12 credits by completing courses opened by departments or colleges (majors), interdisciplinary majors, or divisions. After the trial operation in the Natural Science and Engineering Departments and joint majors in the 1st semester of 2023, the system will be expanded to all departments and colleges (majors) in the 2nd semester.

A student in their 3rd semester or later can apply for the micro major system. However, it is not applicable in the following cases: △ new undergraduate students in recruitment departments (College of Humanities, English Literature, and Linguistics, College of Social Sciences, and College of Media, Arts, and Science) who did not apply for the 1st major; △ students who major in the single (intensive) course and multi-courses of a department or college (major) that supervises the micro major; and △ students who have a major related to the courses designated by the department, college (major), or division that supervises the micro major system.

Students can apply for up to two micro majors (however, the micro major of Artificial Intelligence Convergence is excluded from the maximum numbers of the micro major), and once the micro major is approved, it cannot be changed or canceled. Additionally, if students have previously completed one of the micro major courses, the completion is approved, and if students change their major to the multi-major in the department or college (major) that supervises the micro major during completion, the micro major approval is canceled. In the case where graduation requirements are met, students can graduate regardless of whether they have completed a micro major.

The certification details for the micro major are listed on the academic transcript for the semester once graduation or completion is finalized and only after verifying the completion for applicants, and the character 'M,' meaning micro- major, will be written next to a course for the micro major. For instance, if a student has completed the 'Advanced Applied C Programming' course, it is written as 'Advanced Applied C Programming (M)' on the academic transcript. However, this character does not appear on the academic transcript before the end of the graduation and completion semester, even when the requirement for the micro major completion is met.
