Taeyoung Chemical Chairman Baek Seung-jin of donates KRW 300 million

for Ilgwan Baek Seung-jin Scholarship

Chairman Baek Seung-jin’s steady donations to Sogang now reach KRW 800 million


Chairman Baek Seung-jin of Taeyoung Chemical Ind. expressed his fondest feelings for Sogang. A donation ceremony was held at 11:00 a.m. on November 24 in the President’s Office to contribute scholarship funds for “Ilgwan Baek Seung-jin Scholarship.” During this event, Chairman Baek donated a sum of KRW 300 million in development funds to Sogang. The most recent contribution has been preceded by KRW 200 million provided in January 2014, KRW 100 million in February 2015 and KRW 200 million in January 2016. Including the most recent installment the amount donated now totals KRW 800 million. To honor and pay tribute to his donation, Sogang University named Room 311 of Jeong Hasang Hall the “Baek Seung-jin Lecture Room.”

 

Moderated by Vice President Jeong Ok-hyun for Public Affairs, the ceremony was attended by President Sim Jong-hyeok, Chairman Baek Seung-jin and his wife Mrs. Jo Seong-uk, CEO Baek Min-gyeong of Taeyoung Chemical, Executive Vice President Song Tai-kyong of Academic Affairs, Emeritus Professor Lee Kap-yun of the Department of Political Science, including Professor Lee Hyun-woo of the Department of Political Science who was also in attendance.

 

Taeyoung Chemical, headed by Chairman Baek, is a globally recognized corporation in the PVC electrical tape industry. The company was established in 1978 under the name Taeyoung Tape Industrial and soon expanded its business abroad. Today, the company has its plants and branch offices positioned all over the world, including the U.S., China, Mexico, India, Vietnam and Thailand. The business has proven technological proficiency in adhesive tapes for automotive wiring harness and electrical insulating adhesive tapes.

 


 

Honorable ties with Professor Emeritus Lee Kap-yun of Sogang prompted the establishment of Ilgwan Baek Seung-jin Scholarship


Chairman Baek has continually shared his corporate success with Sogang. His honorable ties with Professor Lee Kap-yun of the Department of Political Science led him to establish the Ilgwan Baek Seung-jin Scholarship which was inaugurated in 2014. This scholarship provides KRW 20 million individually every semester to 20 students. So far, a total of 191 students have received KRW 315.73 million in scholarship funds.

 

President Sim Jong-hyeok conveyed his gratitude by saying “I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to Chairman Baek of Taeyoung Chemical and his family who lent great support to Sogang through the Baek Seung-jin Scholarship and also to Professors Lee Kap-yun and Lee Hyun-woo who have provided the opportunity for such valued relationships. Backed by the support of Sogang members, Sogang will do its best to nurture profound talent and to motivate students to be committed to contributing to society.”

Chairman Baek also made his remarks about the donation, stating “I would like to extend my gratitude to Sogang University for arranging this event and I feel proud in assisting Sogang. I hope this scholarship will help Sogang University students concentrate on studying without feeling financial pressure. I believe scholarship recipients will become competent people who contribute to society and I am rooting for them.” 


After the greetings, photographs were taken and a plaque of appreciation was awarded, followed by scholarship beneficiaries reading letters. One scholarship recipient who is currently a junior in the Business School vocalized in the letter of appreciation, “I have the utmost respect for the benefactor as he has demonstrated his generosity with Sogang through his donation even though he is not a Sogang alumnus. I pledged to myself that I would follow his model and become a valuable member of society who plays such a role in the future.    I will work hard to fulfill my full potential and grow into an upright citizen.”
