Sogang K-MOOC Lectures Selected as ‘Excellent Courses’ for 2020

Grades of Very Excellent (S) for ‘Exercise Physiology’ and Excellent (A) for ‘Understanding the Cultures of German-Speaking Countries’

In the annual evaluation of the ‘2020 Korean Massive Online Open Courses (K-MOOC, hereafter)’ project, hosted by the Ministry of Education and the National Institute for Lifelong Education, two lecture courses from our school were highlighted for their excellence (out of 365 courses developed from 2018 to 2020).

As a result of the evaluation based on institutional capacity, course operation, and course statistics (number of course participants, completion rate, course attendance rate, etc.), the two courses of ‘Exercise Physiology’ (taught by Professor Choi Dai-hyuk from Graduate School of Education) and ‘Understanding the Cultures of German-Speaking Countries’ (taught by Professor Kim Hyeong-min from the European Languages and Cultures Department) were selected as excellent courses. This is particularly meaningful because the school’s ‘Exercise Physiology’ course was selected as one of only two courses in the education field to receive the grade of ‘Very Excellent (S).’

K-MOOC is a service that allows anyone to experience excellent online courses from renowned university institutions for free, anytime, anywhere. Since 2015, the platform has provided more than 1,100 courses. After having been selected as a K-MOOC Leading University in 2017, Sogang was selected as a ‘2nd-Stage K-MOOC Leading University’ in 2020 and has been developing and operating a total of 14 courses to date.

Lee Ye-kyung, director of the Center for Teaching and Learning, said, “I hope this accomplishment has helped to quench the public’s thirst for prestigious university education during this difficult time of COVID-19. In addition to the two selected courses, all K-MOOC courses at Sogang University strive to satisfy the intellectual needs of diverse individuals with their differentiated and high-quality content. We will continue to endeavor to create courses that show the value and excellence of Sogang education – not only in Korea but across the globe.”

Looking forward, this year’s plan is to once again develop and operate a total of four new courses at Sogang, including △‘Urban Economics,’ by Professor Kim Kyung-hwan from the School of Economics, △‘Logical English Writing,’ by Professor Lee Yo-an from English Literature and Linguistics in the Department of English, △‘Limited Ethics: Causes and Prescriptions,’ by Professor Min Jae-hyung from Sogang Business School, and △’Korean Grammar and Sentences for Academic Writing,’ by Professor Oh Kyung-sook from the Sogang Institute for Whole Person Education.
