Adieu 2020 in Memory of Sogang's 60th Anniversary

"From your Pride to the World's Pride"

Through this eventful and tumultuous year spent dealing with COVID-19, 2020 was also recognized as a special year for Sogang — its 60th anniversary! In April, a commemorative event was held, highlighted by the President's congratulatory speech and interviews offered to members of the press. At the time, President Park Jong Gou said, "The 60th anniversary of Sogang is the starting point of its new challenge to educate today's young generation to see the future." This sentiment sparked the slogan for the 60th anniversary of 'From your Pride to the World's Pride.'

• Winners of Special Awards and Honorary Awards in Commemoration of the 60th Anniversary of Sogang

In November 2019, a committee was organized to screen winners for the Special Awards and Honorary Awards in commemoration of the 60th Anniversary of Sogang (chaired by Acting Executive Vice President of Research & External Affairs Oh Kyung Whan). The committee then started receiving recommendations for candidates in January 2020. While the awards ceremony was scheduled to be held as part of the 60th anniversary celebrations, it was postponed due to efforts to curb the spread of COVID-19. After screening candidates for their great contributions to Sogang's development, the committee selected 10 winners: four for Special Awards and six for Honorary Awards. The list of individuals and their major contributions are included below, and each winner was granted a plaque and a prize to mark their achievements.

• Special Video Created in Commemoration of Sogang's 60th Anniversary

A special video produced to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Sogang University presents interviews with 12 professors and alumni during the early periods of Sogang, including Professor Emeritus Kim Yong Gwon of the Department of English, Professor Emeritus Kim In-Ja of the Department of Psychology, alumnus Choi Chang-seop (Department of English Literature, 1960), and alumnus Ahn Cheol (Department of Physics, 1960). These interviews are organized into three stories that recollect the spirit surrounding Sogang's foundation and the value of its unique educational offerings.

- Sogang Story I: The Start of Sogang and the History of its Innovation

Story I shows professors and alumni in the early days of Sogang, recollecting the education that distinguished this remarkable institution from the outset.

Episodes are shared relating to Sogang's strict academic system that included the FA (Failure because of Absences) system, fixed-seating system, book-review assignments, and innovative methods that no other university had attempted, such as its emphasis on English communication and interpretation.

- Sogang Story II: The Heart of Sogang and the Name of its Devotion

Story II covers the background of building the heart of Sogang, its library, and the stories of love that surround it. In addition, the value placed on realizing Sogang's 'first in Korea' achievements is conveyed through testimonies by alumni who recount the efforts needed to accomplish feats such as building a studio, introducing up-to-date computers, and authorizing admission for physically disabled students.

- Sogang Story III: Sogang in the 60s and 'Sogang-in' (Sogang People)

Story III shows Sogang alumni speaking of their determinations and messages of hope for the future of Sogang. Yu Il-gi (Department of Political Science/History, 1973) said, "Sogang University is, in fact, just starting its journey. The past 60 years can be seen as a period to build the foundation for Sogang. I hope that the next 60 to 100 years and beyond will serve to foster many talented human resources to lead Korea."
