Emeritus Professor Kim Young Han

Donated KRW 50 million to the Department of History Development Fund







Emeritus Professor Kim Young Han donated KRW 50 million to the development fund of the Sogang Department of History on November 24. The fund will be used as scholarship for graduate students in the Department of History.

 

Professor Kim taught in Sogang’s Department of History from 1984 until 2009, lecturing on the Western history of the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Religious Reforms. During his tenure, he also took the position of President of The Korean Historical Association in 1994, President of The Korean Society for Western History in 1998, Director of Library in 1999, Dean of the College of Humanities and International Cultures in 2001, Director of the University Archives in 2002, Dean of the Graduate School in 2005, and President of The Association of Graduate School Presidents of Korea in 2006. He is currently a member of The National Academy of Sciences. Professor Kim's academic contribution has been accompanied by his other contributions. Since 2002, he has donated to the Fund for the Establishment of the College of Humanities and Liberal Arts, the Scholarship for Fostering Talents, and the Sogang Development Fund on its 50th anniversary.

Though there was no ceremony held due to COVID-19, President Park Jong Gou said in his Letter of Appreciation, "Throughout his long service to Sogang University, Emeritus Professor Kim Young Han made great contributions to the development of Sogang through his devoted education and research activities. Even after he resigned, his contribution continues by offering the scholarship to support student learning. I extend my deep gratitude for his life-long contribution to the development of Sogang University and to the achievement of its educational ideals."


Called the “Kim Young Han Scholarship,” the fund will be prioritized for students majoring in the Western history of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, with KRW 2.5 million available per student per semester starting in the spring of 2021.
