Sogang Institute for Whole Person Education Holds Final Presentation

of 'The World Made by Sogang’

- Student-participant Contactless Project to Solve Various Social Issues -

Sogang Institute for Whole Person Education held its final presentation of 'The World Made by Sogang' project — a problem-solving project for social contribution — on Monday, November 23. The project is part of an annual student-participant competition where undergraduate students take the initiative from organizing teams to planning and executing the project. The 2020 event was planned under the theme of 'Contactless Living' in considering the COVID-19 pandemic that has affected the world in 2020. Starting at the end of September, a total of 40 students across 13 teams joined in competition for eight weeks. Being online, the project was open to not only Sogang students but also members of the public across the country.

Perspectives toward the 'Contactless Living' were shared over a broad range from 'Overcoming the Covid-19 Blues' to 'Development of a Platform for Exchanging Used Clothes.' The winning teams were chosen for having the greatest contributions to society. The final winners were made up of one team for first place, two teams for second place, and three teams for third place. The projects earning the highest scores were as follows:

The spirit for planning the 'Artact' project entailed overcoming the depressing elements of everyday life under COVID-19. The Artact team, made up of Jang Yewon (Art & Technology, '20), Kim Dong-hu (Economics, '20), and Kim Tae-eun (Journalism and Strategic Communication, '20), presented an art platform providing easy access to anyone, and their efforts earned them first place. All 139 projects submitted to 'Artists in the Room' are exhibited on the team's Instagram account, which got 1,954 Likes and enjoyed voluntary participation by a huge number of visitors. Additionally, each project was uploaded alongside videos in which the makers explained their projects in an effort to broaden the touchpoints between the makers and viewers.

Kim Tae-eun said, "In the beginning, I was not sure if our project would be successfully operated; however, we just did our best and I think our efforts and enthusiasm helped all the team members float through the two months of work as if in a dream. With the closing of 'Season 1 of the Art Exhibition Hall in the Corner of a Room,' we are currently planning Season 2, and we'll be running towards 'A Better World Made by Sogang.'

One second place was awarded to Kim Jin-a (American Culture, '17) and Oh Da-gyeong (Chinese Culture, '17), who presented the ‘Agit Sogang: Online Cultural Exchange Project.' Planned for the purpose of promoting exchanges between Korean and international students at Sogang, the project operated in two programs: 'Interviews with International Students' and 'Sogang Non-Summit Meeting.'

The team posted five interviews with international students on Sogang Community such as Instagram and Facebook and gained great popularity among Sogang students. Moreover, a video titled 'Sogang Non-Summit Meeting' showed four undergraduate Sogang students from different nationalities who sat together and engaged in free conversations on diverse topics, such as friendship, college life, and living in Korea, which again gained great interest, especially about international students at Sogang.

Kim Jin-a said, "From planning through completion, I gained personal experience in all procedures of project execution, and my views were broadened through the meetings with a variety of students. I hope to continue producing more content on 'Interviews with International Students' and 'Sogang Non-Summit Meeting' until these become settled as cultural exchange activities with international students to represent Sogang University."

One third place was awarded to the 'Seeya!' web platform, used to share views from different seats within a theater for performances of dramas and musicals. The team consisted of Park Hye-ri (History, '17), Lee Hye-in (Economics, '17), Im Ha-eun (Mathematics, '19), Kim Jun-hyeong (Economics, '14), and Ahn Jae-yeon (Economics, '18). By sharing the experiences of audience members, the platform was the first ever to offer searches for viewing options in different theaters. As the first step, they selected two small-sized performance halls on Daehak-ro, including Yes24 Stage. They then succeeded in distributing the beta version of the app through prototype development procedures. The result of this was positive, as 119 reviews were collected from 33 users. While developing the web platform, the seat-arrangement system was also designed, enabling application for different structural features in a theater, such as the seating arrangement and spatial composition. In addition, the app was specially designed with consideration for the website interface for users to intuitively figure out what views they may encounter.

Ahn Jae-yeon said, "Based on the feedback collected from users during the competition, we're going to expand the service and have its official opening during the winter vacation. We will then try to offer ease-of-view information searches for theater audiences for dramas and musicals."

Director Woo Jae-myung of Sogang Institute for Whole Person Education said, "I believe that, through this event, students can cultivate various capabilities, such as problem-solving skills and initiatives, team work and leadership through team activities, community service capabilities for social contributions, unity of knowing, and acting by carrying out what they have learned. Going forward, I will try to help this contest contribute to the development of the world and play a key role in changing the world into a more beautiful and blessed place."
