Kwon HyukBin (Electronic Engineering Major '92),
Smilegate Group Founder and Chairman,
Forms 'Rev. Villarreal Memorial Scholarship'

The 'Rev. Villarreal Memorial Scholarship' has been formed with the support of Kwon HyukBin ('92, Electronic Engineering major), Group Founder and Chairman of Smilegate.

When he read an article titled "A Scholarship Possible only at Sogang" from Sogang Yetjip Vol. 441, Alumnus Kwon HyukBin was reminded of the late Rev. Felix Villarreal, to whom he was most indebted, and this pushed him to make the decision to deliver a scholarship for Sogang students.

In his interview for Sogang's online journal, The Sogang Gazette, in Issue No. 38, he said, "I cannot miss mentioning my relationship with the late Prof. Rev. Felix Villarreal, who made a great contribution to the development of the Internet in Korea and led Sogang to becoming the third university in Korea where the use of the Internet was made possible. At that time, he taught us with the most up-to-date textbook from the California Institute of Technology. Though Computer Science & Engineering was only my minor, I enjoyed his classes so much that I got an A+ in all of the ones I took." He also emphasized his meetings with Professor Villarreal, saying, "What I learned from them was very helpful, offering new experiences that were unavailable in my major classes. Professor Villarreal motivated me to study Computer Science. Come to think of it, I think I was predestined to come to Sogang University. Professor Villarreal was really my life changer."

Starting in the first semester of 2021, the 'Rev. Villarreal Memorial Scholarship' will be granted to two students chosen from the list of applicant students in the Department of Computer Science & Engineering, where the late Rev. Felix Villarreal served as a professor. The scholarship will cover full tuition for one student in financial need and half of the tuition for another student demonstrating excellent school performance.

The late Rev. Felix M. Villarreal Castelazo, S. J., was born in 1945 in Mexico City and entered the Society of Jesus in 1970. He received the priestly ordination and became a visiting professor of Electronics at Sogang in 1978. From 1980, he served as a professor of Electronic Computing (present-day Computer Science & Engineering) and also director of the Electronic Computing Institute (present-day Institute of Information & Communication) until he was called up to Heaven in 1999 at the age of 54.
