Wins the Prize for Excellence at the ‘2022 Jeju Road-Traffic Prediction AI Competition’

Oh Seung-hwan, an alumnus of Sogang Business School, won the Prize for Excellence at the '2022 Jeju Road-Traffic Prediction AI Competition.' The award ceremony was held in Maison Glad Jeju on Tuesday, December 6, where Oh received his prize, along with KRW 1 million in prize money.

Hosted by Jeju Special Self-Governing Province and Jeju Technopark, and organized by Dacon, the 'Jeju Road-Traffic Prediction AI Competition' aimed to predict the regression of road traffic based on traffic information in Jeju, which is known to suffer from serious congestion issues due to increased numbers of Jeju residents and foreigners. A contest was held for two months from October 3 to November 28 under the topic of 'Development of the AI Algorithm for the Prediction of Jeju Road Traffic.'

Oh Seung-hwan used his AI model to predict traffic volume by location and timeline from Jeju’s past traffic information in order to establish effective traffic policies and use them to manage congestion. In particular, he generated various derivatives related to traffic volume, reflected the data of the peak tourist season, and presented a stable AI model through an ensemble. Consequently, he won the Prize for Excellence in the contest after beating out more than 700 teams and 1,400 people.

Mr. Oh is a member of the 1st graduating class of the AI Big Data Innovation major of Sogang Business School, having won three AI contests from 2021 to 2022. Since completing my MBA, I have been working as a data scientist. This contest was a good opportunity for me to check the effectiveness of the AI technology that I have developed and to enhance it, said Oh Seung-hwan.
