Professor Shin Choong-soo of Mechanical Engineering Department

Wins ‘2022 Research Excellence Award in Bioengineering’

- In recognition of his contribution to interdisciplinary academic development in mechanical engineering and bioengineering -

On April 21, 2022, Professor Shin Choong-soo of the Department of Mechanical Engineering was presented the Research Excellence Award in Bioengineering for 2022 by the Korean Society for Mechanical Engineers in recognition of his contributions to the academic development of Koreas bioengineering field.

The Korean Society for Mechanical Engineers was established and approved on October 29, 1968, by the Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning (currently the Ministry of Science and ICT) with a specific purpose of achieving academic and technology progress and development in the machinery field and facilitating industrial development.

The Research Excellence Award in Bioengineering was given in high recognition of Professor Shin’s studies on musculoskeletal biomechanics and biomedical engineering and his recent discovery of neuromuscular and biomechanical changes before and after core-muscle strength training in a human body. He presented these findings in the American Journal of Sports Medicine, offering directionality in developing better prevention and rehabilitation programs for anterior cruciate ligament injuries, which take up a large portion of sports-related injuries.

In addition, he was also recognized for his steady contributions toward promoting interdisciplinary academic development in mechanical engineering and bioengineering. For this, he recently developed an exoskeleton device that supports metatarsophalangeal joints or toe joints, presenting his research findings on the effects the device had on leg muscles in walking. He also presented his findings on the biomechanical effects of knee sagittal-plane alignment and key ligamentous laxity in total knee arthroplasty.
