Sogang Business School Student Kwak Jong-woo Honored with
Presidential Award at 20th Korea Glami Awards
Kwak Jong-woo, in the junior year of the Sogang Business School, received the honorable President's Award at the '20th Korea Glami Awards Youth Invention Idea Contest' for his invention, 'Web Access-based Real-Time Web Crawling Statistical Information System.' The award ceremony was held on September 11 at the Nam Jong Hyun Invention Culture Center) in Cheorwon, Gangwon-do.
Hosted by the Korean Intellectual Property Office and co-sponsored by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Science and ICT, and the Glami Co., Ltd, this invention contest for youths is held to support the development of main players in intellectual property through the early discovery of creative talents for invention in the future industrial society equipped with competitiveness in knowledge. Over 2,300 participants have challenged since March and 150 winners has been selected through the course of three rounds of screening. To prevent COVID-19 spread, all the screening sessions were conducted on-line, including the public screening made through video presentations.
While at the shopping mall, Kwak Jong-woo thought, ”What if I had my own shopping mall?” and so invented a statistical information system that analyzes data such as advertisement access history, fees, and payback information on a multi-commerce platform. In this way, independent shopping mall operators registered on the platform receive information analyzed from the above-mentioned established statistical information system, and users can build a user-based on-demand independent shopping mall site by collecting payback services all in one place.
Taking the 'Big Brother' in George Orwell's 1984’ as an example, Kwak said, "I think that even the same information can be abused depending on how it is used, like the Big Brother character who is the managerial power that controls society through the monopoly of information. I want to become a representative of Sogang who can make a positive impact on our society by using the big data that is constantly pouring out to good places in this era.”
