"Getting Closer against Geographical Distance"

- Award Ceremony for 2020 Photographs/Essays/UCC Competition of Student Counseling Center for

'Wise Sogang Students Overcoming the Corona Blues' -

Counseling & Psychological Services led a competition from early July until the end of August on photographs, essays, and user created contents (UCC) on the topic of 'Getting Closer against Geographical Distance' for students of Sogang. This competition was organized to help Sogang students overcome the depression and inertia resulting from the long-lasting COVID-19 — the so-called 'Corona Blues' — and was wrapped up with the online award ceremony on September 25.

A total of 17 works in photos and essays were submitted, from which six teams (one first-prize winner, two second-prize winners, and three third-prize winners) were selected through a three-stage judgement process. The award ceremony was held online.

The first prize was given to Kim Seo-yoon of the School of Economics for his essay titled 'When Things Look Black, There's Always a Silver Lining.' Seo-yoon recognized the insight that, in a tough situation like COVID-19, he was able to share more time with his family to learn more about each member than ever before. Moreover, with social distancing, he had more time for himself, which he transformed into an opportunity for various challenges. He described all these factors as 'Silver Linings.' His message was that there are positive sides to all negative happenings, in which we must keep going and focus on what we can do. From that, what started as suffering may turn out to bring healing in some respect. His essay was highly recognized for the writer's clandestine reveal during the process of his family realizing positive points in the face of frustrating situations.

The second prize was given to Park Hyun-ji of Sogang Business School and Seo Min-ji from the Department of European Languages and Cultures. Hyun-ji calmly described the meaning of putting little things into practice against many limitations from COVID-19 in her essay titled 'Walking on the Spot.' Meanwhile, Minj-ji depicted the everyday life of her family rearing fish and sharing common interests in her essay 'Space for Everyday Life.' They received high evaluations for the messages put forward that we must recover the value of everyday life that seems to be on pause during the COVID-19 crisis.

Lastly, the third prize awards went to Jung Hyo-jin of Sogang Business School for her video 'How I Have Overcome the Corona Blues,' which showcased witty footage of her own experiences during self-quarantine, and 'The Meaning of Dreaming' by Kim Jae-min from the Media & Entertainment Track in the School of Media, Arts, and Science, and 'When We Meet Again' by Yoon Yeo-gyung of Sogang Business School.

Director Yon Kyu-jin of Counseling & Psychological Services said, "All the awarded works have one thing in common: they are messages of hope with warm perspectives and frank stories presented to the world, despite the tough realities of exhaustion in the face of COVID-19. I hope these stories expressed in various methods can help all Sogang students take wisdom in overcoming this situation."
