Department of Art & Technology Joins in Media Art Creation with Amorepacific

- Collaborative media art project with Amorepacific's CSR Team and utilizing recycled cosmetic cases in celebration of the 12th Good Recycle Day -

Professor Kim Ju-sub and graduate student Sung Beksin from the Department of Art & Technology, Sogang University, created a media artwork title '1652 Summer Lights' with the CSR Team from Amorepacific.

Created as part of the Green Cycle Campaign held in commemoration of the 12th Good Recycle Day on September 6, '1652 Summer Lights' was unveiled as a piece of audience-participatory interactive media art. By use of 1,652 empty cosmetic cases sent back by customers after use, a 3.6-meter wide installation was created. In this artwork, each empty case represented 'summer,' the hottest and arguably most active season of the year, and, continuing this summer simile, each sparkling LED light was expressive of our most fiercely lived moments in life. Sung Beksin said, "I hope that this work can serve as a reminder of our lost moments in life that have been forgotten in the business of everyday living."

The project manager, Professor Kim Ju-sub, said, "I hope that the participation of this Green Cycle Campaign will serve as momentum for all to cherish the resources we have on earth."

For this artwork, customers of Amorepacific joined in a campaign to 'retrieve used cases,' donating what amounted to 2,143 tons of materials by August 2020. This artwork is currently being exhibited at the headquarters of Amorepacific and will be displayed at ‘2020 Grimdosi S#5 Waypoint: Seoul’ at Sejong Center for the Performing Arts from October 16 through 18.
