Sogang University's Institute for Biological Interfaces

Awarded in MOE's '2020 Research Capabilities

Reinforcement Project in Basic Science’

- Winning a grant of up to KRW 3.5 billion over six years to build a cutting-edge bio facilities center for joint use -

The Institute for Biological Interfaces (IBI) of Sogang University (Director Prof. Shin Kwan Woo of the Department of Chemistry) has been awarded the MOE's '2020 Research Capabilities Reinforcement Project in Basic Science.' Through this project, the aim is to assemble bio-related equipment scattered across the Department of Chemistry and Department of Life Sciences into a 'Bio-Core Facility for Biological Interfaces' to foster a state-of-the-art research environment in which graduate students and researchers can concentrate on their research under conditions that guarantee safety. For this project, up to KRW 3.5 billion will be funded over six years, beginning in 2020, with world-class, superior-value equipment continually installed throughout the facilities.

Since its foundation in 2010, the IBI has grown to become South Korea's best bio-related research and education center. In 2019, it was selected as the MOE's focus-research institute, funded with KRW 4.5 billion over nine years with the aim to develop 'functional artificial cells.'

After securing a precise design and new human resources, remodeling construction will be launched in October for the new Bio-Core Facility for Biological Interfaces, to be built in Ricci Hall Annex. The 31 articles of equipment converged within this facility will be managed and operated for maximum utilization in education and research for related Sogang departments, as well as to be utilized as core infrastructure to lead research related to biological interfaces across South Korea.

IBI Director Prof. Shin Kwan Woo stated, "This award comes as a result of the devoted support from the Research & Business Development Foundation, Sogang Administration Office, and various departments, including School of Natural Sciences. My goal is to expand the IBI to become the nation's prime example of research infrastructure in order to serve for Sogang in leading science and technology in bio going forward."
