for the 21st National Assembly Session

Congratulatory Ceremony for the Newest Elected Sogang Alumni Members for the 21st National Assembly Session was held on May 25, at 19:00, at the Diamond Hall on the 22nd floor of the Plaza Seoul. Held under the catchphrase, "We are Sogang!" this congratulatory ceremony was attended by some 95 people, including five of the 14 Sogang Alumni members elected for the 21st National Assembly session on April 15 - Seo Byeong Soo (Economics, '71), Lee Hae Sik (Philosophy, '82), Hong Seong Guk (Political Science, '82), Yang Won Young (Life Sciences, '91), Jung Chung Rae (Graduate School of Public Policy, '19) - as well as the chairman of the Sogang Board of Directors, the President of Sogang University and several other faculty and administrative staff and alumni.

Alumni Oh Jong Yun (Business Management, '87) took the role of the MC for the session. The ceremony began solemnly with a salute to the national flag, which was followed by a congratulatory address by Sogang Alumni Chairman Kim Gwang Ho (Business Management, '72). Chairman Kim gave thanks to the five elected National Assembly members and other attendees for attending the ceremony and went on to introduce the elected alumni's activities.

In his congratulatory speech, President Park Jong Gou used the analogy "New wine into a new wine bag" quoted from the Bible, encouraging the elected alumni to present new directions for the National Assembly.

The ceremony was followed by dinner, which began with a prayer by Chairman Park Mun Su, blessing the future activities of the elected alumni members and hoping for world peace. Representing the electees, Seo Byung Soo proposed a toast and was followed by additional toasts by Alumni Association representative Lee Kyeong Ro (Business Management, '76), the Vice Chairman of Alumni Association and Jang Seong Cheol (Chairman of the MBA Alumni Association).

The most senior member of the electees, Seo Byeong Soo stated on the success at his fifth trial, "When I first entered the political world, there were just two politicians from Sogang University. Seeing the number of graduates from Sogang who are in the political sector now, I now realize how powerful Sogang has grown. I am honored to have been elected as a member of the National Assembly with Sogang's help. I promise I will not disgrace the spirit and educational values of Sogang University as a politician."

Businessman-turned-politician, Hong Seong Guk said, "I was busy as an ROTC in college, and, after graduation, I was busy writing books as well as working at my job. Now, at the National Assembly, rather than simply playing politics, I pledge to engage in congressional activities centered around policies on the basis of what I've long yearned for achieving to suit to the teaching of Sogang."

Having worked to transform Korea's political culture while at college, Jung Chung Rae said, "I struggled with strict attendance checks and scrupulous report writing even during my graduate school days. Thanks to that, however, I now have people around me asking, "Where did you learn so much?" and I can proudly answer that it was from Sogang Graduate School," assuring he will be a politician that will do justice to the name of Sogang University.
