The symbol is an offshoot of the Coat of Arms tradition dating back hundreds of years in Western European Universities. Originally, the special pattern showed a noble family's insignia and symbols, military colors, ancestry, reputation, and spirit.
Sogang University's colors are scarlet and silver. Scarlet indicates loyalty to the 460-year tradition of Jesuit education around the world, victory in overcoming ignorance, and involvement in caring for other persons. Sterling silver is always a symbol of true value, high quality, and dependability.
The pointed arch dividing the shield into upper and lower parts is the Korean letter "ㅅ", "S" for Sogang. It symbolizes strength and alert intelligence looking upward. The upward thrust is toward God, who protects and helps this University that carries the name of Jesus on its badge. The "IHS" at the head stands for Jesus, as written in Greek, the first three letters having served as a symbol of belief in the truth of Christianity since about the fourth century. St. Ignatius Loyola, founder of the Jesuits, adopted the insignia more than 400 years ago to represent the true leader of this work of education.
The crown below symbolizes the unity of all knowledge and harmony of the wisdom of East and West united in the world view of Jesus. It also symbolizes Sogang's goal to be a leader in education through the excellence of its academic standards.
