'Major Exploring Day' for Future Sogang Students

Hosted by the Admissions Office of Sogang University and sponsored by the Ministry of Education and the Korean Council for University Education, the 'Major Exploring Day' event began at 10:30 a.m. on January 16 (Thursday) at Geppert-Nam Duck Woo Hall. Organized to help first and second grade senior high school students from across the country to experience and learn about major disciplines, the event was composed of sessions to promote and introduce Sogang's diverse programs and to explore the majors related to each department.

Won Jae Hwan, Director of Admissions Affairs, delivering his Welcoming Address

Opening the event, Director of Admissions Affairs Won Jae Hwan said in his welcoming address: "Successful people shared two characteristics: one is that they have clear goals to achieve, and the other is that they live very enthusiastic lives in achieving these goals. This career-exploring camp has been planned to help you set clear goals for your own life. I encourage you to set your own goals and strive to achieve them."

The Welcoming Performance by TRIPHATHY, Sogang University's cheering squad

His address was followed by Sogang Student Ambassador Hanigaram's introduction to Sogang and a welcoming performance by the university's cheering squad, TRIPHATHY. Next, students dined at Gonzaga Hall and followed Hanigaram on a tour of classrooms arranged for the purpose of exploring the majors of each department.

From 1:10 to 4:10 p.m., the major exploring programs progressed in Part I and II. For the future Sogang students on hand, eight departments provided sessions for exploring majors: Korean Language and Literature, Life Sciences, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, American Culture, Psychology, Art & Technology, and Global Korean Studies. Current Sogang students, acting as mentors, introduced their respective departments and led small-group activities to highlight actual program experiences and practices. They help the participants imagine their own version of college life at Sogang.

The Art & Technology Department's programs, in particular, attracted special interest from the participants. Current Sogang students moved the tour along through six classrooms to introduce projects they had created throughout the semester. The students in attendance showed deep interest in learning that, once they enter Sogang, the university's expensive filming equipment might be loaned out to them, free of charge. During the Q&A session that followed, heated questions were raised about portfolio-making skills and the image of Sogang talent.

The rest of the career exploring camp unfolded successfully, wrapped up by Director of Admissions Affairs Won Jae Hwan's closing address at 5 p.m. Choi Seo Yeong, a junior student in the Department of Global Korean Studies (School Year '17), who emceed the opening and closing ceremonies, stated, "I was so happy to see all the students actively participating in the programs. I hope this event has helped these students plan their own career paths." She expressed encouraging support for her potential Sogang alumni.
