Fr. General Arturo Sosa of the Society of Jesus Visits
Sogang University St. Ignatius Chapel
In the afternoon of July 16, 2019, Fr. Arturo Sosa, S.J. met with members of Sogang University at St. Ignatius Chapel and advised them about what roles and direction Sogang University should take as a Jesuit university.
In his welcoming speech, president Jong Gou Park said, “I appreciate Fr. General Arturo Sosa for your sincere interest in Sogang University and the Korean parish of the Society of Jesus. We, Sogang University, have strived to protect Christian values against a strong tide of secularization and commercialization.” Particularly, the president pointed out the fact that we should return to our source, Ignatius spirituality, and gave special meaning to Fr. Arturo Sosa’s visit as it would encourage every Jesuit in Korea.
On behalf of Sogang faculty, corporate director Lim Jeong-bin, emeritus professor Lim Sang-woo (history), and student body president Kim Hyeong-eun conveyed their gratitude for the academic excellence achieved at Sogang University. They also inquired about the roles and future direction of Sogang; in his response, Fr. General Arturo Sosa emphasized the fact that a Jesuit university should be a place where possibilities are discovered to improve society through research and teaching.
Furthermore, Fr. General Arturo Sosa explained that a great Jesuit university depends on not educational excellence itself but how respectable its alumni are in terms of their moral character. He added, “Universities should not only seek knowledge but also proclaim the joy of the gospel and even go forward like a social fighter to light up the path to human liberation by actively participating in history.”
