Sogang University Selected as a Hub University

for Supporting Career Development for Students with Disabilities

Sogang University was selected as a hub university for the project of career building for students with disabilities. This project systematically provides bespoke support for career exploration for students with disabilities to broaden their quality job opportunities and to help them realize their dreams.

The Ministry of Education selected six hub universities for different regions, including Sogang University. The selected universities are Sogang University and Korea National University of Welfare for the metropolitan area, Korea Nazarene University for Chungcheong and Gangwon, Chonbuk National University for Honam and Jeju, Daegu University for Daegu and Gyeongbuk, and Busan National University for Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam.

Sogang University and other selected universities will collect data on enrolled and graduated students with disabilities in the region and will operate an integrated career building program. In addition, consulting services in collaboration with relevant agencies, such as the Korea Employment Agency for the Disabled, will be offered in order for disabled students to progressively explore their own career options with extended capacities. Every hub university will be supported with 50 million KRW and this financial support will be utilized for operating and labor expenses related to the program.

Due to the increased number of the special college entrance exam for students with disabilities, the number of disabled students rose from 419 in 2006 to 816 in 2016. However, there has been criticism that education programs tailored to these students has only been extended to focus on the elementary and middle school levels. The current project was initiated against this backdrop.
