New SOFEX (Sogang-Sophia Festival of Exchange) Held
Inter-University Exchange Program Designed to Deepen
Cultural Understanding and Communication
Sogang University and Sophia University of Japan (President: Yoshiaki Terumichi) jointly held the New SOFEX (Sogang-Sophia Festival of Exchange) from November 23 to November 25 at Sogang University. This academic exchange program between enrolled students at the two universities serves as an arena for sharing the experiences and knowledge of international students to obtain the capability of co-existence with other cultures – a trait fully required in this global era.
The New SOFEX is operated in the form of a liberal arts program titled "SOFEX 100: East Asia and College Education." Based on the experiences in East Asia, the program aims to enhance sensitivity for human rights for socially alienated people and to raise communication and mutual understanding skills among different cultures.
Sogang University and Sophia University respectively selected 20 students (40 in total) to participate in the program. The selected students attend identical classes opened by the two universities and participate in three telecommunication discussions over a period of 16 weeks. Three-day exchange programs are also held on two occasions. The lectures are held in English. From November 9 to November 11, 20 Sogang Students visited Sophia University in Japan as part of the exchange and, for this edition of the program, Sophia University students also visited Sogang University.
Back in 2010, marking a first for any Korean university, Sogang University held the SOFEX sports tournament with Sophia University. In 2018, SOFEX transformed itself to become an academic exchange program and, in March, the agreement for the New SOFEX was signed. In September of this year, the New SOFEX program was reborn.
