A Time to Remember Those Departed :
Requiem Mass 2018 for the Sogang Family

November 2 is All Souls’ Day, a day celebrated by Catholics in prayer for departed souls. Since 1984, Campus Ministry Affairs has held the All Souls’ Day mass to mourn and commemorate deaths within the Sogang family. This year, the Sogang Gazette was on hand to take a peek at the mass held in recognition of the Sogang community.
At 7:00 p.m. on November 2 (FRI), the All Souls’ Day mass for 2018 was offered at Saint Ignatius House at Sogang University. Rev. Park Jong-gou, President of Sogang University, presided over the mass for the congregation that included Park Mun-soo, Chairman of Board of Trustees; Rev. Park Byeong-gwan, Dean of Campus Ministry Affairs; faculty and staff; and students. People gathered in assembly to remember dearly departed members of the Sogang family and to pray earnestly for their souls.
The mass began with the burning of incense in remembrance of the departed. Rev. Park brought the attention of the congregation to the fact that human history is a ceaseless cycle of life and death, and that death is just another form of life. “We too need consolation as much as the family of the departed souls needs it,” he added, praying that all those present would be filled with peace and comfort. Rev. Park Byeong-gwan, Dean of Campus Ministry Affairs, thanked the congregation for taking part in the mass, while Chairman Park Mun-soo emphasized his wishes that “the mass brings everyone together and give comfort, just as the fragrance of the incense ascends to Heaven to be offered up to God.”

After the mass, participants shared snacks and tea at the Office of Campus Ministry Affairs and wished peace upon all who were present. “It was a meaningful moment of remembering the departed souls from the Sogang family,” said Gu Pil-woo (Economics, 2018). “I wish more students could take part in this mass to make it even more meaningful.”
