A design for Sogang University’s Administration Building, which has high value in terms of architectural history, is currently being exhibited at “Kim Chung-up Dialogue” at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA).
The design of the Administration Building of Sogang University is one of the early works of Kim Chung-up, a maestro of modern architecture. Commemorating the 30th anniversary after his death, the MMCA opened “Kim Chung-up Dialogue” to look back on the Korean history of architecture. For the exhibition, the blueprint, which has been kept at Sogang, was rented and has been exhibited at the main hall and the exhibition hall 2 of Gwacheon MMCA from Thursday, August 30 to Sunday, December 16.
Sogang’s Administration Building, Kim Chung-up’s work in 1958, faces toward the west. The building is unique in that the awning panels are attached to the exterior of the building to block glaring afternoon sunshine. The angle of the awning is delicately adjusted to drop a sharp shadow to the ground and highlight the design to the outside, showing off dramatic and flamboyant scenes with the sunshine and flow of time.
Kim Chung-up, the first generation of Korea’s modern architecture, was responsible for architecture and civil engineering at Le Corbusier Architecture Lab in 1952. In 1956, he opened his own lab, Kim Chung-up Architecture Lab, and in 1965, he was conferred with the Chevalier title and the Seoul Culture Award, and was awarded a medal from the French government. His representative works are Sogang Administration Building (1958), Choheung Bank Headquarters (1963), and Cheongpyeongsanjang (1986).
